On April 10, 2012 a beloved mother, teacher and friend was lost. Karyn Kay, a teacher at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts died a tragic and sudden death at the age of 63. It became an important mission for one of her former creative writing students, Christina Tapia (Class of 2011) to make sure she was remembered for the loving, eccentric, passionate person she was. And so it began, the task to find the best way to memorialize her. Tapia set out to raise money to adopt a bench for Karyn, known to her as Ms. Kay in Central Park, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She started a campaign entitled, Karyn's Korner, to raise the necessary funds. With the help of many students and friends of Ms. Kay, $3,704.23 was raised. Although it was a large sum of money, it was not enough to adopt the bench in Central Park as planned. Over time and with further research, Kay's former student was able to find another and possibly more suitable way to memorialize her late teacher. In August of 2012, two trees were adopted in honor of Karyn Kay. One located outside of her apartment building in Hells Kitchen, Manhattan and another in front of her "home away from home", Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School.
